Wedding Insurance and Coronavirus (COVID-19)

PLEASE NOTE: Our team is actively working on every inquiry. However, given the unusually high volume, response times may be longer than normal. If you need to file a claim, please follow the instructions here.

The coronavirus pandemic has had a large impact on the world around us, the wedding industry included. Given the current concern over the pandemic outbreak of COVID-19, the disease caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus, we want to take this opportunity to share some information about wedding insurance and this unprecedented, complex, and rapidly changing situation.

Here are some resources for couples as they monitor the situation ahead of their big day:

The WedSafe Takeaway? "Because of the fluid nature of the situation, coronavirus claims must be handled on a case by case basis to properly assess what coverage is applicable to each bride and groom, due to the endless variables and scenarios that can arise," said Steve Lauro, vice president of Aon's WedSafe program. "Like most insurance, cancelling for the fear of something potentially happening, including coronavirus concerns, would typically not be a covered reason for cancellation. Also, given the news coverage and official designation as a pandemic, it is considered a known event, which would likely preclude any coverage for policies sold after a certain date in time."

"WedSafe is focused on helping brides and grooms protect their special day and continues to offer the often-required Wedding Liability policies," said Lauro. "Every policy is different, so we encourage couples to read their terms and conditions carefully, contact us with any questions – and most of all do everything they can to stay well and safe during this challenging time."

Additional Information

It is uncertain at this point if every policy sold prior to the “known event” condition has coverage.  Our position is that if you purchased a policy and your event was cancelled, that you submit a claim and K&K/Nationwide will review to determine if the cause of the cancellation is covered.  Every condition, situation and claim is different and will be reviewed to determine if there is coverage.  It is not possible to comment on every situation or condition that may or may not be covered.

Due to the quickly changing circumstances surrounding COVID-19 and potential denial of claims, we are unable to offer event cancellation coverage during the ongoing crisis.  Please continue to check back with us for event cancellation coverage when government restrictions on gatherings have been lifted.
